Outfit guide for couples

Engagement sessions, anniversary photos, or just your good ol’ couple’s adventure session. No matter what you are preparing for everyone always asks the same question “what the heck do I wear?”

The Do’s and The Don'ts

When picking outfits I recommend keeping in mind the word “complement” rather than “match.” Although coordination is key, there is such a thing as matching too much. Don’t choose identical outfits; instead, choose “color-families,” such as pastels or earth tones. For example, if blue is your color of choice, have everyone choose different shades of it, rather than everyone buying the same outfit. We do however must let you in on a little secret, we love the way pastels look in your photos so we will always recommend those over the darker earthy tones.

Avoid spray tans if possible. If you must get a spray tan, choose an olive tone and get it about a week or so before your session so it has time to fade.

Avoid neon/fluorescent colors (especially lime green, salmon, or neon orange) as these articles of clothing can distract from the scenery, your faces, or reflect in the sun and cause your skin to have different colors on it.

Incorporate layers and clothes with some texture to add visual interest to your look and give you multiple posing and styling options. Jackets, sweaters, scarves, textured fabrics — all of these things add that extra umph, making the difference between a basic image and an extraordinary one.

A quick note to the guys

Dudes I get it, having your picture taken might not be in your top-10 favorite things to do during your downtime. And at first you might feel sort of awkward being in front of the camera. But I think you’ll find that by the end of the session, it’s a lot easier than you thought, and you even had a little fun. Plus it will be a good excuse for you to admire, love on, and kiss your beautiful gal!

Hair & Makeup

Sessions are the perfect excuse to get extra dolled up with professional hair and makeup! Professionally done hair & makeup last longer than typical hair & makeup, and it also tends to hold up better against humidity and wind.
It’s important that you look and feel your best for your photos – and we are always in favor of a little extra glam and pampering!

Accessories

Statement jewelry is a great way to add a pop to a simpler dress. Sunglasses, Belts, Scarves, Handbags – all add variety to your images and give you more posing options. Bring whatever you have, and we can add them, or not, based on the look. Lace and tulle look amazing in photographs and dresses with lace sleeves are a great way to help slim arms.

Depending on your location, you might want to consider a fit and flare or a flowy dress. They look great in walking and photos with movement. Choose an outfit you feel comfortable in, but don’t be afraid to dress up!

Props

Champagne is always a good idea. If you’re planning to bring props to your session, we recommend including them only if they’re meaningful to you. A blanket, flowers even your furry friends.

Pets

Our dogs are a huge part of my family, which is why we love when couples choose to incorporate pets into their session. Keep in mind that bringing a pet along often means that we’ll need to choose a pet friendly location.
We won’t have the pet in every single photo so we recommend bringing a friend or family member to hold him or her in between shots.
If you’re going to bring a pet, We recommend exercising your pet before the session and bringing your pets favorite toy or treats. Depending on your pet’s fur type, it might also be a good idea to groom them before the shoot.

Plan something fun after your session

If you’re anything like me, you probably don’t get dressed up all that often. Which means that the day of your session is the perfect occasion to go for brunch if your session is in the morning or a date night if your session is at sunset.

The session is another part of celebrating your love and heading off on a nice date afterwards is a great way to end the session!

In conclusion: be confident and prepare to have lots of fun! If you’re confident for your session, you’ll look confident in your photos. As a photographer I strive to bring about the natural, fun side to my clients. This usually helps the client forget I am taking their pictures and in turn you get more Instagram worthy photos.

I know that this guide is long but I hope it covered the basics of what you’ll need to know to prep for your session! However if there is something I missed, I am always here to help and provide my advice and recommendations!
